Shades of Darkness Ravenborn A R Kahler Books
I really struggled to finish this book because it was so incredibly boring about 90% of the time. And I hate saying that about a book because it’s obvious the author did pour a lot of time and thought into it. Unfortunately, majority of the book was purely descriptive. Every page was drowning in details of the location, scenery, architecture, etc. and it all became very repetitive. Building up a clear idea of a scene is important, but this was just excessive. The story had an extremely slow start. Nothing important or interesting happened until the 7th chapter and then it slowed down again. The ending was good and finally (thankfully) wrapped up the loose ends of the plot itself. The mystery of who or what exactly was the antagonist was finally made clear. I’m a sucker for cliffhanger endings no matter the quality of the book, but I definitely won’t be reading the next in this series.

Shades of Darkness Ravenborn A R Kahler Books Reviews
This was definitely an interesting story. But it wasn't quite what I was expecting...
Based on the summary, I was expecting something that clearly had a more supernatural bent to it (which I got). However I was a little thrown when the mythology got thrown in there. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love mythology of any kind, but especially considering that I hadn't really been expecting it to show up here, it threw me just a little.
For the most part, Kaira actually kind of frustrated me. She spent pretty much the whole book trying to assert the fact that she couldn't date because she was a loner and she was broken and no one would want her, etc, etc. However anytime someone (Ethan, Elisa, Chris) tried to get past her defenses and prove her wrong, she'd throw up her walls because no one wanted her, etc. Plus I really kind of hated the fact that she kept alluding to the fact that there was damage from before, but no one knew what it was other than the obvious (relationship didn't end well (gross understatement, but a fact none the less)). There was also too much mystery surrounding her past. I mean, an occasional "something happened and I'm worried it will happen again" is fine, especially when it eventually leads to a reveal, but Kaira's reveal felt like it took to long to come around, especially since it seemed like every time she turned around, something would remind her of the past.
Chris was a decent character. It did feel like he was a little too shy, but he also seemed to genuinely like Kaira and want to do whatever he could to help her even if she didn't want to let him in. He was really good with doing what he could to let her know he was there, yet at the same time backing off when she pushed him away. Which she did a lot. Then there's the fact that the two of them have a shared...thing...and it just kind of fits for the two of them.
The rest of the characters were pretty good. Although I did feel like Ethan was too pushy with the whole Kaira/Chris thing. I mean, yes it was clear that Chris had a huge crush and, in moments of weakness, Kaira too, but at the same time, she kept saying she didn't want a relationship. The fact that he kept pushing was too much. It would have been different if she'd previously expressed feelings of any sort towards Chris but was now backing out for whatever reason. Since she really hadn't, Ethan's pushing was a little annoying. However, I really liked the friendship he and Kaira had. They both kind of just fit together and their banter was pretty funny.
One thing I did like about this book was the theme of living your life that ran throughout the book. Yes, a lot of those kinds of statements came because of death, yet at the same time (and one of the character's even says this), isn't the best way to honor someone's life by living your own? That was one thing that I think Kaira's friends did a good job of trying to show her. You can't keep yourself locked up if you expect anything to happen. You can't lock yourself away because you're afraid of the past. Now Kaira didn't necessarily do the best job of listening to this until the end, but her friends did a good job of trying to show her.
Overall, this was a decent book and I do want to see what happens next (especially after that cliffhanger!), but I don't know that I'll necessarily be clamoring to get a hold of a copy the second it's released.
A compelling mix of the realistic and the fantastical, where one girl has to balance the demands of art school, friendship, and the possibility of love with the more extraordinary demands of a mythological fate that it trying to kill her -- or maybe trying to get her to kill. In other words, it's like Buffy goes to art school and all hell breaks loose. Really, whatever your reference point (and this book is for you if you like any of those reference points, or The Raven Boys, or Six of Crows, or any other kickass YA with birds in the title), check it out. Just be warned -- it's the first in a series, so the ending will definitely leave you wanting more.
I cannot describe the emotional and spiritual response I had to this book. The characters are so well defined and complex and enjoyable. The story is a bit slow but I didn't mind because the author painted such vivid imagery with his words, it was like wondering through an art gallery letting the paintings tell their stories. Wonderful
I love A. R. Kahler as a writer. when I read his books my world disappears and I become one with the story.
I'd heard great things about this book and bought it because I heard the author during the First Draft podcast. I really love it! The story is captivating and the imagery is as eerie as you could hope for in a book about omens and darkness.
Waiting and waiting for something to happen. Took forever and the way was dull. The other series were infinitely better.
Great worldbuilding, interesting characters, hard to put down plot. I have enjoyed all of this writers' series and put him at the top of my "Best New Finds."
