Adjusting to the human world has been hard, especially when the Regents and Paladins are reluctant to trust him. Geologist Lacey Sebastian isn't happy when Barak is assigned to her lab and it gets even worse when she meets the man who turns out to be intelligent, honorable, and way too attractive for Lacey's peace of mind.

I really enjoyed In Darkness Reborn and I was excited to be back with the Seattle Paladins. Dr. Laurel Young stood up for Barak and kept him from being killed or sent back to his world but Barak wonders if he was really shown mercy. He struggles to fit into a world that doesn't accept him and I felt so much for Barak and his lonely existence. He has this stoic quality to his personality and you can tell he's used to be alone and he's accepted that as his lot in life. Every time he was pushed away or treated poorly by others I just wanted to hug him and tell him he was loved.

Initially, Lacey wants nothing to do with an Other and she's pissed that she's stuck with Barak. She doesn't trust him and it's made worse by Lacey's Paladin brother, Penn, who is constantly trying to pick a fight with Barak. But Lacey can't deny her attraction and she's not a woman to suffer fools, including herself. Lacey's dislike of Barak was natural considering her upbringing but there were a few times I wanted to shake her and make her see how much pain Barak was in. That being said, I really liked Lacey's fire and passion both for her work and for those she cares about.

Once these two give in they're on fire but all of their problems aren't solved because Barak is keeping some pretty big secrets and if they want to be together it may just be them against everyone else. This series continues to build momentum as the Paladins continue to look for the person who is stealing from the Other's world and going after Paladins in the human world.

HIGH LEVEL Book 3 of Morgan's Paladin series which starts with Dark Protector (Paladins of Darkness, Book 1). Paranormal romance series following the "bad boys club" model- lighter than Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series, not as intense, but along the same lines. Dark, violent, but sexy men who need a strong willed, but gentle woman to ground them. HIGHLY RECOMMEND reading the books in order- many para-romance series can be read in any order, but this one specifically builds on past plotlines.

THIS BOOK was an excellent third installment. Both lead characters are strong and sexy and have unique attributes. Barak was a thrillingly complicated character- almost too complex for this story as not everything gets smoothed out. This only leaves more for future books. He has to be the best man in the series so far. Watching him try to adapt to his new world is both funny and endearing. Lacey isn't quite as compelling, but makes up for it in the potential solace and lust she offers Barak. She also has some history with the Paladins, which makes the story that much richer.

The plot and violence in this book was less intense than the two previous books, perhaps because more time was spent on exploring Barak. The "bad guys" tend to be a bit overly simplistic and here the main antagonist was nearly comical, but a new character, Penn, was introduced who made a captivating supporting character- providing moments where my heart was in my throat!

BOTTOM LINE If you liked the first two books, then you will find this one satisfying. Not quite as gripping, but definitely a fun read.

1. VERY SIMILAR Lara Adrian's Kiss of Midnight (The Midnight Breed, Book 1) - darker, more violent, but incredibly intense. Vampires protect the world from their evil brethren.
2. VERY SIMILAR J.R. Ward's Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 1) - also darker, more violent and incredibly intense vampire romance series. Vampires protect the world from their evil brethren. Vivid glimpses into the evil perspective as well.
3. VERY SIMILAR Alyssa Day's Atlantis Rising (Warriors of Poseidon, Book 1) - less dark, more humor, but still intense. The lonely protectors of the lost city begin to find their mates
4. VERY SIMILAR Gena Showalter's The Darkest Night (Hqn) - sexy, demon-possessed immortals looking for true love in a world of hidden magical creatures.

SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT APPROACH (less boy's club, more variety)
5. Sherrilyn Kenyon's Fantasy Lover - Dark Hunter series with shifters, vamps and Greek gods, focuses more on the romance than Psy-Changelings. The first book is not as good as the rest- it just gets better and better.
6. Kresley Cole's A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, Book 1) - slightly more adventurous and intricate magical romance series (never mind the ridiculous title)
7. Jacquelyn Frank's Jacob (The Nightwalkers, Book 1) - demons, were, vamps and other fae finding their better halves in races that should be the enemy
8. Larissa Ione's Pleasure Unbound (Demonica, Book 1) - demon centric romance series that sets up a demon-run hospital under a human city. Not as well written as the others.
9. Alexandra Ivy's When Darkness Comes (Guardians of Eternity, Book 1) - vamp/demon/were romance with loosely connected characters
