This is a very imaginative take on a mythical people during a mysterious period in Irish history. The depiction of the Tuatha de Dannan was fascinating and easy to get into. Torn between love and duty, Brigid's life is a key thread in the weave of her people's fate. The author beautifully brought this time to life and I found in spite a few weaknesses, I gobbled it up in a couple sittings.The landscape and the characters merge. The subtext presents a believable and tragic theory behind how these pre-Celtic people might possibly have been transformed into Gods. However, some of the language and expressions were too obviously modern (almost cliché) and a few of the characters sat on the edge of being credible for that reason.
I found the pace to be quick and I don't know if it was intended as YA, but it feels like good YA fiction. The characters might appeal to a younger audience.
All in all, an entertaining and fun read. Recommended for lovers of historical fiction, ancient Ireland and a good love story.

What a great story! I initially purchased this book to support a new author, and the daughter of a high school friend. I was WONDERFULLY surprised by the excellent story and how Sheila reeled me in to the story! I can't wait to read her next story and see how Brigid and her "anam cara" fare moving forward. Congrats to Sheila Lamb for the great start to what I hope to be a long and fruitful career as an author!
Once a Goddess is an adventurous book that keeps you wondering what will happen next. The feisty nature of the heroine, Brigid, and the blend of history and myth give life to an intriguing storyline. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the sequel!
I found the characters so well formed. In fact ,I was surprised how thoughtful the author was to consider how different cultures and affect reliationships and family dinamics! I am married to an Eastern European, and I found I could really relate. Great book!
I have never read anything like this before. I am new to and have been downloading dozens of free and inexpensive books from many genres. This book immediately captured my attention because of the magical and mythical happenings. The main character is a strong, female searching both for love and the truth. She has many roles ranging from gathering herbs for healing to fighting in battle. There are many twists to this story. I was very pleased to find out this is the first novel of a series. I can't wait to read more from this new author, Sheila Lamb.
Sheila R. Lamb brings Brigid of Ireland to life within the pages of "Once a Goddess". Not only are her characters legendary, but the book itself is a masterpiece of design, weight, and layout. Her dreamy prose floats above Ireland's solidly defined landscape to evoke the magic and mystery of a lost civilization. A surprising twist leaves the reader longing for more about Brigid and her children. Let's hope we don't need to wait too long for next installment of this trilogy. Once A Goddess, the first in Sheila's trilogy about Brigid of Ireland, is an historical fantasy about Irish mythology that works even for people who aren't familiar with the genre, as I was not. The novel features well-drawn characters, compelling conflicts and evocative descriptions. It's a winner! I hope for more from this young writer.
I was so engrossed in Sheila R. Lamb's storytelling that I read the entire book in one sitting - much to the dismay of my dog, who wanted to go to the park, and to detriment of the tasks and errands needing to be done that Saturday (who needs clean clothes, anyway?).
Brigid marries Bres, the son of the warring clan’s chieftain, as a way of bringing peace to the two tribes. Bres is keeping secrets from Brigid. Brigid is keeping secrets from Bres. And there are secrets between the two tribes that a handful of tribal elders have managed to keep for years, despite the intuitive ability of Brigid’s clansmen and -women.
Suspense builds throughout the novel as secrets come to light and Brigid struggles with the fallout from each one. Yet not all of the mysteries are solved - leaving me impatient for the release of the next book in the trilogy.
